About Us

SECARE was started in 1993 in an effort to help control the exploding pet population, and to provide a needed service to a rural county in Colorado.   There was nothing officially in place prior to that and people had no where nearby to take strays or abandoned pets.

SECARE established a federal 501(c)(3) non-profit status a few years ago after going through a five year process.

The purpose of SECARE is to accept adoptable dogs, give them whatever help they need–medical, social, or behavioral–in order for them to fit into normal society as good animal citizens.

SECARE has lately begun exploring the possibilities of expanding our care from just pets to helping people as well.  Specifically combining pets and people in a way that improves the lives of all concerned.  More on that as it develops.

SECARE is primarily run by volunteers who donate their time and energy and sometimes their dollars in an effort to try to improve the lives of these animals that come into our care.

SECARE runs almost entirely on adoption fees and donations; having  very limited contracts with surrounding communities and the county to work as animal control for the area.

After the wildfire of Ordway, Colorado in April 2008, SECARE suffered severe losses of equipment and building, although, thankfully, none of the shelter dogs were lost in the fire.  Since then, SECARE has been in the process of rebuilding and replacing valuable and needed equipment.   The support of the general public at that time has been generous and gratefully accepted.  The replacement and rebuild will continue at a slow process, but it is continuing.

Thank you to all of our supporters in our good times and bad.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  To our new and future supporters, welcome, thank you, and we look forward to a bright tomorrow together.
